Provide housing for a refugee family

  • Families need access to affordable housing. During the first year, government sponsored families will receive $877 or less per month from the federal government for shelter depending on family size, with additional funds provided for food and other basic needs.  Privately sponsored refugee families will receive comparable funding from their local sponsors.
  • Families range in size from two to more than 10 members, with most families averaging six or seven. Refugee families can apply for Canada Child Tax Benefits upon arrival, which means they may have additional money to pay towards rent and household costs dependent on their assessment.

What type of affordable housing do refugees need?

  • Long-term housing to accommodate various family sizes; greatest need is for units of three or more bedrooms to accommodate larger families.
  • Units that are at average local market rent or lower. Average rates across Waterloo Region are: $821 or less for a one bedroom, $969 or less for a two bedroom, and $1,116 or less for a three bedroom unit.

What are the benefits to landlords?

  • Stability of tenancy - responsible tenants who are establishing permanent homes in this community;
  • Consistent income sources confirmed through a letter of income verification;
  • Tenants who are connected to ongoing settlement support from community agencies and will have access to translation and case management assistance, as needed; and
  • Contributing to a welcoming, thriving, and diverse community and supporting the integration of Syrian families in Waterloo Region in a very significant way.

Are you privately sponsoring a refugee family?

Private sponsorship groups searching for housing for incoming refugees should outline their needs in this survey. Sponsorship groups will be contacted as potential matches are made to available spaces. Groups are working as quickly as possible to match accommodation options-- your patience is appreciated throughout the process. Every effort will be made to match your needs to available accommodation options but there is no guarantee that the right unit will be identified on this list. Private sponsors are strongly encouraged to pursue other options while waiting to be contacted.
